Cloud Computing into Mobile Devices

Ever heard of Mobile Cloud Computing?? Over the years, Cloud Computing has been used for desktop applications and softwares as well as file storage. Now, Cloud Computing technology has also moved into the mobile industry, known as Mobile Cloud Computing. In short, Mobile Cloud Computing refers to the technology whereby mobile applications are stored and processed on external servers or also known as 'cloud'.

There are a few benefits of Mobile Cloud Computing. Below is a brief explanation on the advantages and disadvantages of Mobile Cloud Computing for various users:

Advantages:

  • Users

Users using feature phones have advantages of using Mobile Cloud Computing because feature phones have low processing power and less memory compared to smart phones. Since currently the number of users using feature phones is more than the number of users using smart phones, thus Mobile Cloud Computing should benefit most mobile device users. Smart phone users can also gain some benefits from Mobile Cloud Computing as users can share files, view shared files online, and also upload from their smart phones which has higher data processing power. This way, users can save a lot of phone memory space because all they need is a browser to gain access to the applications.

  • Company/Organizations

Companies can share resources and applications easily among staffs and customers while saving hardware and software costs. Mobile Cloud Computing stores applications and run softwares all on the 'cloud' servers so that companies do not need to buy storage hardwares and softwares. Customers can access the applications from any devices, from desktops, to laptops and also mobile devices.

  • Developers

Developers can have a wider market and more potential customers because users can gain access to their applications through any browser including mobile browsers. Other than that, they can also have larger revenues (profits) because developers do not have to create multiple versions of the same application. This is because it is accessible by all devices users. The developers also do not have to pay fees to the mobile platform owner.

Other than the above, Mobile Cloud Computing has also contributed to a new type of business model which is NaaS ( Network as a Service), as stated in Aepona's Official Website.

Setbacks:

Mobile Cloud Computing brings a lot of benefits to different mobile users; however, it has some setbacks which prevents it from being perfect. One of the major setbacks is that cloud applications requires a stable and constant connection in order to run properly. Thus, users whose mobile device have unstable connection will be unable to connect to any cloud applications or softwares. Next, if too many users were to connect to the 'cloud' at the same time. All of the users will experience slow connection and is thus time consuming and inefficient.

Here is a video about when Mobile Cloud Computing is needed and when it is not needed.:

Mobile Cloud Computing has became one of the hot topics among Cloud technology topics. Mobile Cloud Computing can come in all forms such as applications, operating systems and others. Mobile Cloud Operating Systems are also known Web OS 2.0. An example of a mobile cloud computing operating system is EyeOS for mobile which the desktop version was previously mentioned in the iCloud9 Video.
